As a class we didn't spend too much time speculating about what it might have been. What we did try to figure out was "How did Paul endure?"

The remarkable faith of this ancient apostle is inspiring considering all he suffered for Christ's sake: stripes, prisons, beatings, stonings, shipwrecks ... He dealt with hunger, thirst, frequent fasting, exposure in the cold ... He was robbed; he dealt with dishonest companions and idolatrous societies. (See 2 Corinthians 11:23-27) Wherever he went - from cities to the wilderness - he was in peril - and then there was the ever present "thorn."

As we pondered Paul's ability to endure, we also stopped to reflect on what helps us endure. Students were asked to fill in the blank on the following sentence:

If I ________________________, I will be strong enough to endure any trial, persecution or weakness of the flesh.

Here are a few of their entries:

... pray consistently with a heart full of love for the Lord
Jenna Hamzawi

... remain above, see in the distance, and gain perspective
Dan Moreno

... have faith in Christ
Brandon Stauffer

... keep on keepin' on
Jack D'Ottavio

... have faith and pray to the Lord
Jenn Gibson

... focus on the light at the end of the tunnel rather than becoming listless and depressed or moping about my situation
Kristy Brizee

... pray
Lauren Larson

... keep the commandments
Alyssa McPeak

... become like Christ
Parker Kjar

Like Paul, these students seem to grasp that the Lord's "... grace is sufficient for [them]: for [their] strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly will [they] rather glory in [their] infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon [them]." 2 Corinthians 12:9

I am grateful these students know that consistent prayer, eternal perspective, individual effort, faith in Christ, looking to His light, keeping His commandments and following His example will invite His power into their lives - giving them the strength to be happy, hopeful people - even if, like Paul, they must live with a "thorn in the flesh." May they always remember the crown of thorns Christ wore for their sakes, and the marks He still bears on His hands as an eternal reminder of His love and power to save us all!

The Road to Emmaus: Recognizing and Being Fed by the Savior

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 291px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SWWY4CUAKfI/AAAAAAAAAWE/1cxeC6NXmNo/s320/Road+to+Emmaus.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5288801425877379570" />
As we wrap up our study of the four gospels this week, we have had the opportunity to consider the many witnesses of Christ's victory over death. So many testified that He truly lives again!

Two of those witnesses walked with the Savior on the road to Emmaus (See Luke 24). Cleopas and his companion did not initially recognize the risen Lord, but after being fed by Him, both physically and spiritually, they realized that He was, indeed, the Savior and Redeemer of the world. The Spirit confirmed this truth as their "hearts burned within [them]" in His presence.

How does the Savior feed us? How can we recognize Him more clearly in our lives? Students responded to these questions this morning:

Brandon Stauffer:
The Savior gives me knowledge through personal prayer and scripture study. I can become more familiar with his teachings and gospel.

Jennifer Gibson:
The Savior feeds me through the scriptures when I read his words every day.

Courtney Anderson:
The Savior feeds me by blessing my life through the scriptures and the words of the prophets. Every day there are small things that the Savior uses to feed me. I can recognize him more clearly by staying on the path of righteousness and focusing on him.

Kennedy Faulk:
The Savior spiritually feeds me, and I can come to recognize him more clearly by being more faithful and spiritual and becoming a better representative of Christ.

Dan Moreno:
The Savior puts wise people in my path to listen to and for me to seek others.

Alyssa McPeak:
He feeds me with the gospel in my life to keep my sights high. To recognize him more clearly I can pray, read scriptures, keep commandments and have a pure heart.

Kristy Brizee:
Just simply feeling my Savior's love and delighting in the gospel gives me that satisfying feeling and spiritual energy boost.

Christina Wood:
Symbolically the Savior feeds me by giving me spiritual experiences. I can recognize him more clearly by doing things that will allow me to feel the Spirit.

Parker Kjar:
The Savior feeds me through the scriptures. I can recognize him through the Holy Ghost.

Vanessa Steeves:
The Savior feeds me by giving me scriptures to read so I can gain more knowledge of Him and our Heavenly Father. I can recognize Him more clearly by reading my scriptures.

Jenna Hamzawi:
The Savior feeds me by giving me the desire to read his words. I am actually at the point of being excited to read the words of the New Testament, and I have not skipped a single night of scripture study. He sends me the Holy Ghost to identify my wrong doings of the day so that I can repent.

Jourdan Satterfield:
He gives me his words that I may feast upon them. I can recognize Him more when I truly study the scriptures in hope that I may truly know the Savior.

Jack D'Ottavio:
He feeds me in everything and every aspect of anything good He does for me. I can stay righteous so I can hear that still, small whisper.

Britanie Kersey:
He feeds me with the Spirit so I know what I need to do and what is right. He feeds me when I read the scriptures or listen to testimonies that His church is true. I can recognize Him more clearly by taking time to just listen and let His Spirit teach me.

Unshaken

Recent events in California have really shaken the nation and the world. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been at the center of a great deal of controversy. Before the Thanksgiving break, we spent a good deal of time discussing several aspects of the debate over marriage and religious freedom. These discussions coincided with our study of some of the Savior's teachings regarding His Second Coming. We learned that in these last days, many will be shaken in their faith. It was helpful, during this process, to recognize that, while we may still have questions, there are aspects of our faith and testimonies that are unshaken.

"I have an unshaken testimony that Prop 8 (Yes) should have passed. Despite initially being no on 8, I researched it and instead of blindly following what the church told us to support, I learned for myself the pros and cons. I decided, for myself, that yes was correct. I think it's better to doubt at first, and learn for yourself."
Jennie Larson
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/STYTft7u5lI/AAAAAAAAAOg/5uVOqDXgxm0/s200/Sem+Seniors+Class+of+09+005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275425449138120274" />

"I have an unshaken testimony that Christ lives and that He has walked this Earth."
Brandon Stauffer
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/STYT3iqHouI/AAAAAAAAAOo/O8yKBWOFxw8/s200/Sem+Seniors+Class+of+09+017.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275425858428314338" />

"I have an unshaken testimony that Jesus Christ died for us."
Amy McGreevy
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/STYUfLy8XLI/AAAAAAAAAOw/2Czf-AT_74k/s200/Sem+Seniors+Class+of+09+010.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275426539486076082" />

"I have an unshaken testimony that Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, shall come again."
Jourdan Satterfield
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/STYViZLdB2I/AAAAAAAAAPA/afPEhEOxrqI/s200/Sem+Seniors+Class+of+09+025.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275427694129776482" />

"I have an unshaken testimony that if I prepare myself, the Lord will make it so ends will meet."
Dan Moreno
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/STYWM2fUydI/AAAAAAAAAPI/73YdS_VW6Zg/s200/Sem+Seniors+Class+of+09+020.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275428423552256466" />

"I have an unshaken testimony that Christ lives and that He will come again. Here are a some gems from the last few weeks:

September 16 - <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SORaPtNVRhI/AAAAAAAAAMg/lqcP4HZQP68/s200/Kathy%27s+video+005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252422291300894226" />

How do I feel when I have been forgiven of the Lord?
I feel peace. There is a moment where I feel everything in the world is at peace and that through Christ our Savior, anything is possible. - Brandon Stauffer

I feel clean, as though I re-entered the waters of baptism and felt the cleansing powers of my Father in Heaven. I feel loved. - Jourdan Satterfield

Whenever I feel that I have been completely forgiven by the Lord, it's a feeling that I could never describe, completely. I feel a happiness that is extraordinary and a warmth that surrounds me. - Christina Wood

When I've been forgiven I feel refreshed and purified. Christ's atoning sacrifice reassures me to drop to my knees and pray. I feel like I can leave my sins at Jesus' feet and He will take care of the rest. - Lindsey Kubo

September 18 -

Sometimes sins we transgress can be heavy burdens. We get tied in the trap they catch us in. Repenting to the Lord or the Bishop is like the Savior lifting our burdens. Christ offers us the yoke of righteousness. - Dan Moreno

The heavy burdens I carry are of every day stresses and preparing for the future. The Savior lifts my burdens by bringing me peace in my heart and soul. He knows my burdens and if I trust in him he will show me how to make them light. Christ offers us His light and easy yoke because He knows us individually and can help us. His atonement is His yoke for us to have an easier life without sin. - Britanie Kersey

September 23 -

After studying several of Christ's parables, I had the students write parables of their own. Among those parables were the "food parable," the "parable of the pizza," the "parable of the magical cheez-its," ... I think the students were extra hungry that morning ... but one of the most inspired was the "parable of the iPod":
The gospel is like unto an iPod. Those with good headphones will hear the music in the iPod. Those with bad headphones can't hear the music. If you download your song/gospel from a bad source like limewire, it won't be as good as if you download from iTunes. - Dan and Brandon

September 24 - <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SORc8I1xjsI/AAAAAAAAAM4/m7lI3e1v7uw/s200/Calm+Storm+Dewey.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252425253655776962" />

When and how have you felt the Savior's calming influence in your life?
Other people's testimonies always make me feel the Savior's spirit. I love learning through other people's experiences. - Jenn Gibson

I've felt the Savior's calming influence at church, through other people's talks and testimonies. - Alyssa McPeak

I haven't had many storms in my life, but one occurred last summer when my grandpa died. I was devastated because I loved him very much and would miss him. However, one of the dominant characteristics of my grandfather was his love of the gospel. I knew that he was in Paradise having a wonderful time, and the Plan of Salvation helped lessen the pain intensely. I still miss him, but the Lord has helped me accept it and move on, looking forward to the day I will see him again. - Amy McGreevy

I realize that everyone experiences ups and downs, but at this particular time in my life I was feeling low, depressed and simply miserable. It was like being lost in a dark tunnel without seeing any sign of light whatsoever. I thought there was no way to see the light again, until I felt an overwhelming power wash over me - my Savior's love. I realized I didn't have to be alone in my trial. He rescued me when I thought there was no hope left. He stood by my side and never gave up on me.
- Kristy Brizee

October 1 - <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SORdltugAoI/AAAAAAAAANA/2MIBU2GiMTY/s200/christ4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252425967932015234" />

Whom say ye that Christ is?
The Savior of the world, a brother, a friend - Kristy Brizee

Christ is my Savior and Redeemer and brother. He has unimaginable knowledge of and faith in the Gospel, and therefore limitless power. - Amy McGreevy

Jesus is not only my rock, my Redeemer, my ultimate example - He is also my brother and my best friend. I am eternally indebted to Him and I can't wait to live with Him forever. Throughout my life He has been giving me "spiritual" hugs and I can't wait to give Him a real hug back. - Jocelyn Matthews

Christ is the rock of my salvation and the foundation for my life. - Courtney Anderson

Christ is my best friend. He is my rock and my Redeemer. He is eternal life and the light of the world. - Lindsey Kubo

Christ is my Savior, my Redeemer. He is my everything because without Him I could not live again, or have a body of flesh and bones. Sometimes I think I can know Him better. I want to know him. - Jourdan Satterfield

Christ is the Son of God. He is our Savior and Redeemer. He died for all of us and He sacrificed His life for His Father. He atoned for all of our sins, so that we can repent and become clean to return to our Heavenly Father again. - Britanie Kersey

Christ is my salvation, my Savior, my Shepherd, my closest friend, my psychologist, my Comforter, the Ultimate Forgiver. - Jenna Hamzawi

New Year, New Students, New Testament

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SL4TRLv9fMI/AAAAAAAAAMY/gzCaBQQkW5E/s320/Christ+at+the+well+detail.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241648202238491842" />
A NEW school year began for our local schools a few weeks ago. With that beginning came the start of a NEW year of early morning Seminary. For me, that means two dozen NEW students and a NEW course of study: the NEW Testament. It has also meant a NEW location – our NEW chapel on Scholar Way in Folsom.

The New Testament’s detailed account of Christ’s life and ministry is a clear call into a newness of life. Questions often serve to amplify that call in our minds and hearts. One such question, as we discussed the Plan of Salvation during our first week of study, was “What has Christ done for me on my path to salvation?”

“If it were not for Christ there would be no Plan of Salvation, so when He came to earth and died for us, He made it possible for me to go back to heaven again. He also helps us every day with the little things. I pray like 24/7 and He always is there for me.”
Ashlee Northrop

“He died for my sins. He’s also put obstacles in my life to help me grow and become stronger and want to be more like Him.”
Alyssa McPeak

“Christ has done everything for me by giving me the ultimate gift: the Atonement.”
Kenny Faulk

The first chapter of John includes several powerful images that represent the Savior and His role in our lives. From John 1:5 comes this thought provoking statement: “And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehendeth it not.” Students recorded their thoughts on these questions: “How does the world get in the way of my comprehension of the light? How can I move the world out of the way?”

“The world gets in the way of my comprehension of the light because we live in the world. The things of the world are all around us and they sometimes get in the way of our Savior and His light. It only is covered because I accept the things of the world into my life. I can move the world out of the way by not doing the things of the world, but by doing spiritual things that will let the light of Christ shine in my life. Be in the world, but not of the world.”
Britanie Kersey

“Sometimes the world seems to fog my vision of the light in the way that the media portrays the ideal woman and makes me feel inferior rather than realize I’m a divine daughter of God. The influence that the media has blocks my remembrance to turn to the Savior. In this case, it’s not really a matter of moving the world, but moving myself and stepping into the Light.”
Kristy Brizee

Today we studied John 4 and 5. In chapter 5 Jesus heals a man at the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath. The Jews, unimpressed by the miracle, persecuted Jesus for violating their rules for Sabbath day observance. Christ was undaunted and boldly shared the good news with them, in spite of their criticism. A member of our class wrote, “What are some ways I can share the gospel outside my comfort zone?” And here are several answers:

“Plant little seeds. You don’t have to give every detail of the gospel to your friends right away. Take time to share certain key principles of the gospel until they are ready to hear everything. Be an example.”
Courtney Anderson

“Talk to your friends about it if you feel ready. It’s good to exercise your testimony by strongly expressing your standards. It also may help your friend’s life later down the road.”
Jenna Hamzawi

“Become more comfortable with the gospel. Learn of Him, draw closer to Him.”
Jourdan Satterfield

“Invite people to church and activities.”
Jenn Gibson

“I think that a lot of times we feel uncomfortable sharing the gospel because either we are afraid of others’ reaction or we don’t have confidence in ourselves. I think the best way to overcome this fear is to put our trust in God and turn to Him. He can give you that confidence to step out of your comfort zone and He will bless you for your diligence and willingness.”
Kristy Brizee

After studying Jesus’ experience with the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4), and noting the woman’s initial confusion about receiving the “living water” Christ had to offer, another class member asked:
“How can I prepare myself to receive a gift from God?”

A few students were thinking along the same lines when they answered:
“You make yourself spiritually clean through righteous doing.”
Brandon Stauffer

“We wonder why we sometimes don’t receive gifts. It’s because we aren’t worthy, or deserving of gifts because of the lifestyles we lead.”
Dan Moreno

“Pray, read scriptures and keep the commandments.”
Alyssa McPeak

It’s true that our works are often evidence of our faith or lack thereof (see James 2:17-18). But sometimes our hearts are ready for change, in spite of current behavior. The Lord knew the Samaritan woman was living in sin – and He still offered her living water. Clearly He could see that her questions were sincere – that she was willing to believe and really wanted to receive what He offered her.

“I can prepare to receive a gift from God by praying and drawing closer to my Savior.”
Lindsey Kubo

“I can be worthy to do things like go to the temple and receive my endowments and blessings. I can also be humble and grateful for all I have so I don’t miss any of the blessings I might receive. I can also do service for others.”
Jocelyn Matthews

One brutally honest student expressed his desires a little differently this morning.

“I don’t wanna go to school or work today. I just wanna sleep and eat because I’m hungry. I want Denny’s and I want to go to Disneyland because it’s the happiest place on earth.”
Trenton Jones

I think Trent may have articulated our common ground with the woman of Samaria pretty well. We are tired of our routines. We yearn for rest, nourishment and happiness. Christ offered her all of that. And He offers us the same!

I’m grateful for new students and for the fresh perspective they bring as we strive together to understand and accept all the Lord has to offer us.

Messages from Malachi

Our final week of Seminary seems a distant memory... but it was only two weeks ago we concluded our two semester study of the Old Testament. The final book in this volume of scripture contains the writings of the prophet Malachi. He taught of tithing, the Lord's Second Coming and of the linking of eternal families, among other things. Below are samples of the students' responses to my questions/instructions regarding these messages from Malachi:

Give an example of the Lord blessing you and/or your family temporally or spiritually. How is this blessing connected to the payment of tithing?

The Lord has blessed my family in time of financial hardship; even though paying tithing seems unreasonable, it ends up helping us out. Tyler Kroff

We have a house and food and clothing because we are granted life's necessities as a blessing of tithing. Ryan Palmer

Yesterday I had to pick up a prescription because you're not supposed to miss a day of meds or it'll mess up your body. So I went, not knowing how much money it would be and I had the exact amount of cash in my wallet. No more, no less. Deanna Newell

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SE2fDhLAwCI/AAAAAAAAAMA/N4BmkSdTdvE/s320/CHRIST+IN+THE+CLOUDS.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209995226730512418" />Tell something you've done to prepare for the Lord's Second Coming that has minimized your fears and increased your faith & sense of peace.

I've tried to surround myself with friends that have a good influence on me. I always know that I can count on them for good advice. Tyler Kroff

I have sought the wisdom of the Lord and I have immersed myself in His spirit through daily prayer, through righteous acts and through exemplification of a charitable being. I have gained my faith. I know that He will come. I will be ready. Ryan Palmer

I try very hard to read my scriptures and have personal prayer almost every night. Tyler Robinson

I have gained a testimony of Jesus Christ, His life and His sacrifice for all of us. Deanna Newell

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SE2f8R3DRqI/AAAAAAAAAMI/2ft44_8usSc/s320/erik-eagale-2.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209996201872803490" />Write a short letter to your parents and ancestors expressing your love and gratitude to them.

Dear Mom and Dad,
Thank you so much for always being there for me when I need you, and for helping me through the rough times. Tyler Kroff

Thank you for preparing the way for me and others who may not have otherwise found the gospel. We have been blessed beyond measure because of the choices that you have made. You have set the example and created the traditions that are sacred and eternal. Ryan Palmer

Dear Mom and Dad and old people,
You guys are great. Thanks Mom for birthing me because without you I wouldn't be here. I'm so glad I was put into your family. You guys are so great. Tyler Robinson

Dear Momma and Dad,
Words can't express how grateful I am for you and your love. You are always there for me with support. Recently I finally realized that you truly do your best to support me in all that I do, but certain things have skewed my vision and all I saw was my mistakes. I'm working on that. Thank you. Thank you for never giving up on me. I realize that I was a difficult child to raise, especially as a teenager. You did your best. You taught me a lot. Deanna Newell

I hope I can make you proud. Thanks for watching over me. Anonymous

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SE2hWEgYBgI/AAAAAAAAAMQ/iw0TFXys95I/s320/IMG_4206.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209997744476259842" />Write a short letter to your future children and posterity, sharing with them one or two things you want them to know about their Savior.

Dear children,
I want you to know that the Savior will always be there for you. If you need anything, pray and ask for it sincerely. Don't let the Savior down. Do good and choose the right. Tyler Kroff

Dear Posterity,
You guys are going to be very cute and talented and, by the way, Jesus is really cool. He saved us and He made it so we can repent. Tyler Robinson

To Future Posterity,
Believe in the Savior. Anonymous

I want you all to know that you are all loved unconditionally by the Savior and me. He died so that we might live again; but not only that we might live, but that we might live eternally in the presence of God. The Atonement opens the door to our eternal family. Through our repentance and His sacrifice we may create powerful covenants and attachments that can never be broken against our will. Be worthy, and repent, for I do not want to lose any one of you. We will live together forever, the fulfillment of eternal joy. Ryan Palmer

Picture This

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SEA51LrA1TI/AAAAAAAAAL4/8aW6VdsqHkc/s400/Seminary+May+21,+2008+004,edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5206224755069343026" />
I took several pictures during this past year of Seminary and also had students' families send me pictures to use for a few projects. We had an interesting discussion based on these questions. Chad's question got a strong response. It was something like: Did Joseph Smith translate the Book of Mormon out of a hat?

Huh?!? To be honest, I'd never heard of this. Chad said this was, indeed, a question he'd been asked and that there must be something to it because it had been featured on South Park, You Tube, etc. When we are asked a question we don't know about, a logical response is "I don't know." Essentially, that was my response to Chad. And that was the end of it, or so I thought.

While I was researching a completely unrelated matter online, I stumbled across a drawing of Joseph Smith with his face in a hat. After Chad's question (which I had all but forgotten) I had to learn more! I clicked on this image. The blog that popped up with the image had a link:

http://lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=2354fccf2b7db010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&locale=0&sourceId=05169209df38b010VgnVCM1000004d82620a____&hideNav=1

This link took me to a marvelous article in the July 1993 Ensign by Elder Russell M. Nelson entitled "A Treasured Testament." It contained, among other less discussed details of the translation of the Book of Mormon, a quote from David Whitmer's writings describing Joseph's use of a hat along with the seer stone in the translation process. I shared this strange description with the class today. What did they make of the whole hat thing? "Interesting." "Weird." I agreed. On both counts.

Some students were quickly able to site scriptures which offered some perspective, i.e. Isaiah 55:8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord." They sited several Biblical prophets the Lord used to perform miracles using fantastic (seemingly magical) methods: Moses, Elijah, Daniel... there are dozens. I mean, if we buy that God kept three men from burning inside a furnace (Shadrack, Mesach and Abednego - see Daniel 3), what is so tough to swallow about a prophet using a hat and a seer stone? After briefly discussing these other miracles I asked, "Is this really important?"

Silence.

Then Ryan Palmer said, "Not necessarily." I pressed, "What do you mean?" He responded, "Well, it's not so important how [Joseph Smith] translated the Book of Mormon, but THAT he translated the Book of Mormon." EXACTLY!

I testify that he did, indeed, translate this other "Testament of Jesus Christ" by the gift and power of God. The Spirit has confirmed this truth to my soul over and over. The fact that he appears to have used a hat doesn't make it less a miracle.

I also testify that the Lord cared enough about Chad and his question to help me find an answer I wasn't even looking for. It was as if I pulled it right out of a hat: The Lord's little miracle for Chad. Now that really matters!

Second Coming Survival Kit

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SC99tFsPaNI/AAAAAAAAAEA/YtCL_TfV4eM/s400/From+camera+007.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5201514308211534034" />Like so many other Old Testament prophets, Zechariah's prophecies foretold the coming of Christ, not just in the meridian of time (Jeremiah 9:9), but for the second time, when the Jews will recognize Jesus as their God (Jeremiah 13:6,9). In fact, "the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one." (Jeremiah 14:9)

Four years ago, Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles gave an inspired sermon at General Conference entitled "Preparation for the Second Coming" (April 2004). Like Zechariah, he fixes our gaze on the day when we will meet the Savior:
"What if the day of His coming were tomorrow? If we knew that we would meet the Lord tomorrow—through our premature death or through His unexpected coming—what would we do today? What confessions would we make? What practices would we discontinue? What accounts would we settle? What forgivenesses would we extend? What testimonies would we bear?"
When these questions were posed to our class, one student responded: "I would probably stop doing a lot of stuff. I would try to forgive my dad. I would tell all my family I loved them and then bear my testimony of Christ." Another added, "We would change - probably tell people who the Lord is and tell them what he does for each one of us. We would also try to improve our standings with our fellowmen. And we would want to say to the Lord, 'I have done everything you have wanted me to do.'"

Elder Oaks challenged each of us to prepare for our meeting with the Savior:
"We need to make both temporal and spiritual preparation for the events prophesied at the time of the Second Coming. And the preparation most likely to be neglected is the one less visible and more difficult—the spiritual. A 72-hour kit of temporal supplies may prove valuable for earthly challenges, but, as the foolish virgins learned to their sorrow, a 24-hour kit of spiritual preparation is of greater and more enduring value."

Several students wrote in their journals what they would put in that "24-hour kit of spiritual preparation." Their lists included:
The Book of Mormon
My testimony
My faith
Soap (representing moral cleanliness)
The companionship of the Spirit
Gospel knowledge
Love
Repentance
Forgiveness
Good attitude
The priesthood
Advice from my parents
Advice from the prophet

Our current prophet/President, then Elder Thomas S. Monson, spoke at an April Conference when I was in high school (April 1972). He told of seeing a sign in a furniture store window which read, "Finishers Wanted." If we begin preparing for the Lord's coming, will we finish? If we undertake to read the Book of Mormon, will we finish? Will we finish repenting and forgiving? Will our faith, our testimonies and our love be enduring? Will we persist in striving to be chaste, in honoring the priesthood, and in seeking the Spirit? Will we always act upon wise counsel from our parents and, especially, from the Lord's annointed?

"Someday, we know not when, Christ will come again. It behooves us all to live faithfully and thus prepare ourselves for that grand event...
The Second Coming of the Lord will be a dramatic finish to His work before the Millennium. Those who labor with and wait for His appearance will not be disappointed. But only finishers, those who endure to the end, will be there."
(Elder Thomas S. Monson, Conference Report, April 1972)

As I reflect on the insights the students in our class have offered, and the counsel the prophets have given, I can sense that we have all begun preparing for the Lord's coming. My earnest hope is that we will finish!

Principles and Prophets

After studying the more extensive writings of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel, we turned this week to the writings of "minor prophets" such as Hosea, Joel and Amos (referred to as "minor prophets" only because their writings are shorter). We have yet to study several more. Why so many prophets? Amos 3:7 reveals the Lord's pattern in dealing with us:
"Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets."

Today's journaling assignment was to identify a prophet, ancient or modern, a principle he taught, and to describe how that principle had made a difference in our lives.

Not every student responded, and of those who did, not all responded appropriately. I have come to expect that from time to time. These students are great people. But they ARE people. Sarcasm, apathy, pride ... creep into our way of being and thinking, and into our exchanges in class sometimes. Unfortunately, we don't always live up to our privileges, when it comes to inviting the Spirit to direct what we say and do.

On this theme of not always getting it right, Bethany found Solomon's life and teachings instructive: "Solomon made bad choices in his life, but at one time he was a spiritual giant. He wrote Proverbs, a beautiful piece of work. When I was younger, my mom told me to read Proverbs. I don't remember why she told me to, but I still remember the peace [Solomon's] words instilled. Proverbs 1:10 says 'If sinners entice thee, consent thou not.' I've consented plenty of times, but I have hope and the ability to repent. God truly wants me to succeed."

Michael reminded us that Noah also taught repentance. Michael states, "I know that I can be forgiven for any sins that I have done. His story also shows what happens when sinners don't repent and I don't want to drown in a flood."

"Samuel taught meekness and lowliness and that is how he chose David as king of Israel," observed Chad, adding that this principle had helped him temper his pride and keep him "willing to try and learn new things."

A prophet who was willing to try and DO new things was Nephi. Erik wrote that Nephi's faith had helped him learn "that by trusting in the Lord we can do incredible things."

Ryan Palmer appreciated Moses' lesson on the value of life: "Thou shalt not kill," while Stephanie celebrated a statement on life by President Gordon B. Hinckley: "Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured." She elaborated, "This has made a difference in my life because there are some points in my life where I am just enduring it but now I know that everything in life should be enjoyed."

Another student impacted by Gordon B. Hinckley was Brandon: "When he was a prophet there were a lot of temples built. Now I can go visit these temples and someday I'll be married in one of them." I love Brandon's commitment to the principles of temple worship and eternal marriage!

Seeing the Biblical pattern of prophets restored in modern times is a great witness to me of the divinity of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Each prophet and each principle invites us to look to Christ. From ancient prophets to those of the Restoration, including our present-day prophet, President Thomas S. Monson, prophets are a vital link between God and His people. If we would know God's "secrets," we must listen to and follow His prophets. Like the Savior, who sought only to do the will of the Father, prophets seek to serve and testify of their Lord and Master. Each principle they teach invites us to do the same.

Surviving the Fiery Furnace

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SBqydkLA6QI/AAAAAAAAAD4/uQ1MRD1Mbkg/s400/Three+men+in+a+furnace.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5195661341121112322" />
Recorded in the third chapter of "Daniel" is a remarkable account of three of the most devout young men in scripture. Having refused to worship the image of Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar, they were given an ultimatum: bow down to the idol or face death in a fiery furnace. The late Elder Neal A. Maxwell of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles had this to say about their bold refusal to put anything or anyone before God:
"Regarding trials, including of our faith and patience, there are no exemptions - only variations (see Mosiah 23:21)... the faithful will not be totally immune from the events on this planet. Thus the courageous attitudes of imperiled Shadrach, Mesach, and Abed-nego are worthy of emulation. They knew that God could rescue them. 'But if not,' they vowed, they would still serve God anyway (see Daniel 3:16-18). Similarly, keeping the unfashionable but imperative first and seventh commandments can reflect the courage which three young women displayed anciently; they said no with their lives (see Abraham 1:11)." Conference Report Oct. 2002

So whether we are rescued in the fire or following it, we feel the Lord's saving presence and power in our lives. How is He with us in our "fiery trials?"

Annalisa - He helps me as much as I come to Him. If I put all my faith in Him, He comforts me and blesses me with hope.

Connor - I would just say that His teachings are with me. The Holy Ghost is with me, and I know His angels are with me when I go through trials.

Tyler R. - He stays with me whenever I'm doing something that's hard for me.

Brendon - The Lord has been awesome: every time I've gotten myself into a really difficult situation, and I give myself up to Him to make things right, He always comes through somehow.

Bethany - He's made sure I'm able to withstand whatever it is. He's helped me learn from whatever it is I've messed up on.

Ryan R. - He gives you his spirit. He makes it so you never have to face a trial you can't handle. He gives you help in the form of friends or family in the very moment you need them.

Erik - He prompts you with what to do and maybe what to say during that specific trial. He also will make you stronger in the belief that you can withstand that trial.

Ryan P. - The Lord is there with me during my fiery trials by ensuring that I never have to withstand heat that is greater than my strength to resist. He does not take away my trials, but He allows me to fortify my faith and conviction to the height of my potential.

Whether I am called upon to live for the Lord or die for Him, I know He lives for me! I know He died for me! My faith is fortified as I hear and see the faith of young Latter-day Christians who recognize the Redeemer's saving presence in their lives.

Studying and Learning by Faith

Michael taught his lesson on Ezekiel 37 last Monday, emphasizing the dual meaning of two passages in that chapter (i.e. dry bones coming back to life=resurrection and, also the return of spiritual life & blessings to the House of Israel AND Sticks of Joseph and Judah coming together=the reuniting or gathering of Israel and Judah in addition to the Book of Mormon and Bible coming together to testify of Christ).

Because of our recent emphasis on student teaching, we have also explored our dual roles as teachers and learners in our gospel study. Read a few responses to part of my "Student Teaching Survey":

1. What is something significant you learned while another student was acting as a teacher?
Chad: [Deanna’s] lesson about striving to not be ripe in iniquity really inspired me to never tempt the Lord.
Annie: The Spirit allows us to understand what the lesson is about.
Deanna: Some of the strongest points made were through the testimonies of the teachers.
Sam: I learned that I can still feel the Spirit when a student is teaching.
Annalisa: That being a good teacher takes time
2.What important lesson did you learn in the process of teaching?
Stephanie: I learned that a lot of work goes into preparing a Seminary lesson.
Erik: That it takes time
Ryan P: I learned that preparation is important.
Deanna: Preparation
Sara: That I should have prepared more
Tyler K: It is hard to teach. I give props for that.
Bethany: The kids in our class don’t want us to fail.
Michael: Scriptures have multiple meanings.
Annalisa: Being respectful to your teacher really helps the lesson go well.
3. How would your lesson be different if the Savior had been in the room? Pres. Monson? Your Bishop? Your parents? A non-LDS friend?
Stephanie: I probably would have been more organized and elaborate on things more than I did.
Erik: I would have prepared more and taught by the Spirit more.
Chad: Probably more sincere and I wouldn’t do anything to disrupt the Spirit.
Deanna: I probably would have tried to prepare better and made a better effort to try to involve Annie in that preparation.
Ryan R.: I would let the Savior/Pres. Monson/Bishop teach.
Sam: I would have prepared better.
Tyler K.: I would have tried to… teach with the Spirit.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SBVnm0LA6LI/AAAAAAAAADQ/XSPcLzYYKiQ/s200/Bednar_medium.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5194171661779265714" />Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles stated: "Ultimately, the responsibility to learn by faith and apply spiritual truth rests upon each of us individually. This is an increasingly serious and important responsibility in the world in which we do now and will yet live. What, how, and when we learn is supported by - but is not dependent upon - an instructor; a method of presentation or a specific topic or lesson format."
Address to CES Religious Educators, Feb. 3, 2006

In response to Elder Bednar's statement the students offered the following insights:
Annalisa - I am learning by study and by faith when I try to have the Spirit teach me something rather than my teacher.
Erik - I am learning by study and by faith when I pay attention to the teacher's words and apply the lesson to myself. When I take the time to understand the specific principles we've talked about, I grow in faith.
Sara - I am learning by study and by faith when I come across ideas that interest me and that I know I will benefit from. It is easier to learn and study by faith when you know you will use that knowledge you've gained.
Tyler - I am learning by study and by faith when I apply what I learn in Seminary to my life's problems. I can learn more about myself and about the Savior when I listen to the messages that the scriptures give us.
Bethany - I am learning by study and by faith when I take initiative and motivate myself to delve into the questions I have to find my answers.
Chad - I am learning by study and by faith when I ignore distractions in Sunday School so I can better feel the Spirit from the teacher's lesson, and by attending optional meetings such as missionary prep class.
Ryan P. - I am learning by study and by faith when I don't let myself off the hook. I hold onto whatever I am learning because I know that it is true. The Spirit manifests itself unto those with a welcome heart and a willing soul.

I am grateful to spend my early morning hours with the willing souls and welcoming hearts that make up our class. We are continually learning from and teaching each other, aided by the Spirit. The Holy Ghost influences our prayers, our ponderings, our questions, and the answers we receive. He confirms our faith in the Savior and increases our gratitude for the Lord's patience, loving kindness, mercy and grace. How blessed we are to study and learn by faith!

Watchmen and Shepherds

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SAp2DtRrtkI/AAAAAAAAADI/4FUH9A4eb0g/s200/CHRIST+WITH+SHEEP.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5191091326563366466" />
This week all the lessons were taught by students. Friday's lesson, given by Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Palmer, focused on "watchmen" and "shepherds." (See Ezekiel 33&34) Prophets are the most prominent "watchmen," and the Lord is truly our Shepherd. But this week I witnessed these wonderful students as they watched out for eachother, warning and shepherding - modeling teaching patterns established by God and His prophets. Here are some highlights:

Erik and Tyler Kroff taught about the Restoration from "Preach My Gospel." Erik showed great dedication by responding to the invitation to attend the teachers' devotional at 6:20 a.m. The highlight of Monday's lesson? Erik and Tyler's simple, strong, sincere testimonies!

On Tuesday we had two short lessons. First Sara and Analisa taught us lesson 2 from "Preach My Gospel": the Plan of Salvation. They came in early with notes in hand. Clearly, they had given serious thought to their presentation. They involved the class through questions, reading scriptures, and even invited Erik to draw the Plan of Salvation on the chalkboard. They capped off their effort with the ever popular Seminary treat: donuts! (Feeding the sheep...)

Next, we heard from Bethany and Stephanie. This duo was also seriously prepared. Their lesson on "The Gospel of Jesus Christ" was filled with thoughtful analysis and application questions, as well as the sharing of personal experiences and feelings. Students were also involved in reading scriptures and quotes. It was wonderful to see the way Bethany and Stephanie worked together with mutual respect and sincerity as they spoke of the basic principles of Christ's gospel.

Tyler Robinson carried the torch for the threesome that taught on Wednesday. He came early and launched into his presentation on "The Commandments" cheerfully, even though his teaching partners were late. The good news is that they DID show up! Sam and Brandon participated in reminding us about the blessing of commandments. Tyler's inspired class activity had students drawing the Ten Commandments on the board.

The chalk board was a focal point during Chad and Connor's lesson on Thursday, introducing us to the prophet, Ezekiel. Chad (flying solo until Connor arrived)drew a fortress wall on the board and asked "What is the function of the wall?" He then drew a tower, with a watchman on lookout. He asked us what qualities we thought were important in a good watchman. The students answered, "Good eyes and a loud voice!" Both Chad and Connor bore fervent and sincere testimonies of our present-day watchman, President Thomas S. Monson and encouraged us to listen to and follow his counsel.

Annie had a case of "stage fright" so Deanna handled her assignment alone. She handled it beautifully! Two pieces of fruit (one, perfect and another, over-ripe) helped her lead a discussion on what it meant to be "ripe in iniquity." Deanna involved students with readings from the scriptures, quotes by general authorities and several thought provoking questions. Her personal witness and testimony of the gospel was humble yet powerful!

Ryan Reynolds arrived early on Friday for the teachers' devotional - another extra-dedicated watchman/shepherd! He and Ryan Palmer were well prepared, and involved the students with lots of discussion questions. Palmer's shepherd illustration on the board was both humorous and instructive, as well as his use of the nursery cut outs. The sheep were surrounded by predators such as a snake, leopards or jaguars, pandas, alligators, and a poisonous (?!?) butterfly. Students identified these predators, respectively, as Satan, media, communism, "spiritual crocodiles," and pornography (it looks appealing but it will kill you).

The Ryans opened their lesson by asking students to write in their journals the answer to this question: "Why is adultery more serious than stealing, and murder more serious than adultery?" Chad's answer took us on an interesting tangent: "Stealing involves temporal, less important things. Adultery is involving spritual children of our Heavenly Father. It is a more sacred rule to break. Murder is an unforgivable sin that cuts short someones earthly progression." This comment about murder sparked a debate about whether one can be forgiven of murder. Most students felt murder could be forgiven, but that it would have a definite negative affect on our opportunity for exaltation. ("No murderer hath eternal life abiding in him." 1 John 3:15) From Elder Bruce R. McConkie we get the following: "Murderers are forgiven eventually but only in the sense that all sins are forgiven except the sin against the Holy Ghost; they are not forgiven in the sense that celestial salvation is made available to them." (Matt. 12:31-32) See "Mormon Doctrine," p. 520.

One more student teaching team remains for next week: Michael and Brendon. I look forward to their watchful words of warning and to their efforts to keep me, and their fellow students, safely in the Lord's fold.

Tears and Cheers

The book of Lamentations, generally attributed to the prophet Jeremiah, is filled with vivid images of sorrow and destruction. These five short chapters contain "a world of hurt." But they also contain hope! (See Lamentations 3:22-26) After our discussion today, the students completed the following sentences: "I am sad when..." and "I delight in..." Some responses are deeper than others, but each is an affirmation that "opposition in all things" is a part of our mortal experience, and that familiarity with sadness makes it easier to delight in what is good. The same Savior who lamented Jerusalem's reluctance to gather to Him (Matthew 23:37)wept tears of joy over the faithfulness of the Nephites (3 Nephi 17:20-22). You may recognize, as I did, that a number of these students are saddened by some of the same things that sadden the Lord, or delighted by those things that please Him.

I’m sad when bad things happen to me or people I care about.
I delight in doing what I love: singing – music in general.
TYLER ROBINSON
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/R_062q6hvEI/AAAAAAAAABA/s7jI7txpXr0/s200/Tyler+Robinson+060.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187367056707796034" />

I am sad when there is contention in my family. During Thursday’s discussion of what we had learned so far, the following items popped out:

· Jeremiah’s calling: He was foreordained to be a prophet (see Jeremiah 1:5) and responded with humility to this calling (see Jeremiah 1:6-7).
· His prophetic warnings: Basically – continue in sin and await destruction OR repent and live! (References too numerous to list)
· True or false: There is a difference between true prophets and false prophets. Bethany remarked that false prophets are “more fun.” This prompted a lively debate!
· Fish stories (see Jeremiah 16:16): On Wednesday Alec Nethercott and Chris Barbour, recently returned missionaries from Norway and Spain, respectively, came to tell us their experiences as hunters and fishers of men. When students were asked to review their presentation, the overwhelming response was “AWESOME!” These two were/are humble hunters and faithful fishers!

After our discussion we all wrote a question relating to one of these topics. What follows is a sampling of those questions and some responses.

What is the difference between foreordination and pre-destination?Predestination means no matter what you do, the fate you suffer will be the same. Example: striving for perfection without the Atonement.
God knowing our personal nature does not keep us to a fixed outcome. We can change our human nature, as we live on earth, which changes our outcome but still means God knew that’s what we would have done.
God can read us like a book but the "denoument" (French for "conclusion") is controlled by the choices we make.
Chad Sellers

For what kind of callings could I be foreordained?
It depends on the type of person you are. You could be foreordained to be a prophet, or you could be foreordained to be a great father or mother.
Tyler Robinson

In a way, we all have a distinct purpose that may vary through different stages of our life. It is up to us whether we can prove to be a fine instrument in the hands of the Lord, and no instrument is less important than any other.
Ryan Palmer

That question is a little intimidating to me. As a woman I won’t be called to be a prophet, but even something that seems comparatively small, like a Young Women’s leader or president is a little worrisome. I know I’m barely adequate to fit the shoes I wear now. It’ll be hard to fill an even larger footprint later on.
Bethany Mathis

Why are true prophets better than false ones? (I think this question was prompted by Bethany’s tongue in cheek remark about false prophets being more fun…)
They help us to return to our Father in Heaven and they have a bigger perspective than we do, so they know what is best for us. They also communicate with God and speak for Him, whereas false prophets speak for themselves and do whatever is in their own best interests.
Ryan Reynolds

Why did Bethany think false prophets are more fun? (Bethany’s remark prompted yet another question…)
Because she was trying to be funny.
Brandon Mecham

How can I best be a fisher of men in the ocean of the Lord?
I can be a fisher of men in the Lord’s ocean by being a missionary at all times and by sharing the gospel with my non-member friends.
Stephanie Allred

-Be a good example. Just know that someone is always watching you.
-Speak kind words.
-Be friendly. Be there for people.
-Never go backward when you can carry on and go forward.
Erik Larson

I can be a fisher of men by not being afraid to talk to anyone about the gospel of Jesus Christ, by being open for every and all questions people have for me, and by being as educated as I can be about this gospel. By doing this I will be able to teach more people the words of the Lord and thus bring them into His fold.
Sara Eggers

I conclude with Brandon’s question. (It goes to show that sometimes, our questions are more important than our answers.)
Why was Jeremiah’s calling so important?
Jeremiah lived in a time of great wickedness, not unlike our own. His calling was vital in his day because he provided a warning voice – a call inviting people to forsake idolatry and return to the only true and living God (Jeremiah 3:12). He told the people not what they wanted to hear, but what they needed to hear!

True prophets call us to Christ! Having just returned from General Conference where we sustained our newly ordained prophet, Thomas S. Monson,(pictured at left) I can testify that he is truly God’s mouthpiece on the earth today. How thankful I am for the warning voices of both ancient and modern prophets. From their lips spring messages of mercy and calls of compassion.
Kathy Wood

All We Like Sheep

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7f4zngcHRnA/SBYS10LA6NI/AAAAAAAAADg/juppQrO92Io/s400/IMGP2449.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5194359935965653202" />
Isaiah 53:6
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 40: 11
He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

Today we studied these passages from Isaiah and then the students responded to the following question: How has the Lord been a shepherd in your life, or in the life of someone you love?
Here are some of their answers:

The Savior can’t lead us unless we allow Him to. If there is resistance, He will wait until we are ready to accept His guidance. This past year has been a very rough time for me. I’ve done things I promised myself I would never do, and yet it’s so hard to stop once you’ve started. However, not once have I questioned my testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He truly is our shepherd. No one in all of eternity could fill that role that He has played for me. For all humanity. I know that when I am strong enough to accept His help, He will be there with open arms to guide me safely home. Back in His arms. Back to the open arms of my Father in heaven. “What comfort this sweet sentence gives…”
Deanna Newell

The Savior has really helped me lately, pretty much the same way He helps everyone else. Just whenever I do something wrong, I pray, and I’m able to make it right. That is the best thing about the Church. It gives us an unlimited number of chances to get our lives straight.
Tyler Kroff

The Lord has been a shepherd in my life by helping me make correct choices to stay on the path of righteousness.
Stephanie Allred

Whenever I am confused or have problems in my life, I know that all I have to do is pray and I know that the Lord will make the way clear and help me overcome the problems.
Ryan Reynolds

The Lord has been a shepherd in my life whenever I have not known where I was going. It is so easy to follow other sheep as they go astray but Christ is the true leader; He is the way.
Ryan Palmer

The Lord has given me strength to get through the hardest times in my life – times when I thought I could just die because nothing was going right. But when I turned to the Lord I found that when everything in life is going wrong, if you have faith, and try to think about the good things life has to offer, instead of just the bad things that happen, then you can actually find true happiness. Some people say – “I have nothing to be grateful for – what good things does life have to offer that I have?” Well, you’re alive and that’s the best thing you could ever have.
Sara Eggers

The Lord has been a shepherd in my life by helping me and my whole family cope through my mom’s divorce. He helped us not to be discouraged and helped us know that we were still loved.
Tyler Robinson

Jesus is a shepherd and I am a sheep. When I fall on my back I need some help to get up. And he always helps me up. One of my good friends has fallen on his back and I know Jesus will help him up.
Sam Holden

The Lord helped my family move to Folsom. It came up out of the blue and we’re here. We’re supposed to be here.
Erik Larson

A shepherd – one who cares for and looks after his flock of sheep - Even though I have grown up in the church I have not always felt the guidance of my shepherd. However, as I look back on my life, I realize that he has always been there. Not through an angel telling me what to do, but by putting me where I need to be (even when I don’t want to go). The one place he has guided me the most could be Seminary. In Seminary I do learn many things, but the thing I love is meeting my peers and seeing who they actually are inside. Their testimonies help me grow and the Lord knows this is what I need, so He sends me.
Michael Getz

New Life in the Old Testament

Our course of study this year in Seminary has been the Old Testament (and sections of the Pearl of Great Price). I’ve read the Old Testament before, but never with the intensity of this year’s experience. It has been edifying to see the way that Christ is present in every symbol, every sacrifice and in the witness of every ancient prophet. Even though the people didn’t always recognize Jehovah as the future Messiah, His love and mercy was continually extended toward them. Do we recognize His love and mercy toward us, even when we fail to recognize Him or put Him first in our lives? It’s easy to point the finger at the children of Israel, but we are just as prone to idolatry, in our way, as they were.

We don’t offer animal sacrifices any more, but there is so much rich symbolism in that Old Testament experience that points to the ultimate sacrifice of our Savior. The ancient tabernacle and early temples were the sites of much of that sacrifice, just as modern temples focus our attention on Christ’s infinite and atoning sacrifice. I love the patterns of that first testament being repeated in Christ’s day and again in ours.

No one testifies more powerfully of Christ in the Old Testament than Isaiah. As we conclude our study of his writings this week, I add my voice to his in declaring that Christ has certainly “borne [my] griefs, and carried [my] sorrows… he was wounded for [my] transgressions… and with his stripes [I] am healed.” (Isaiah 53:4-5) I love Isaiah's comforting reminder that no matter how often, or how profoundly I mess up, the Savior's atonement makes it possible for me to repent and begin again. "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord; though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." (Isaiah 1:18) For me, there is definitely new life in the Old Testament!
